Mexico is worried after the hard-earned victory
Mexico started the Copa America mission with relief. But the fight against Jamaica was not easy for them. After several unsuccessful attacks, Gerardo Arteaga's only goal in the second half saw the team win. However, Edson Alvarez, the captain of the team, had to leave the field after getting injured in this match.
Mexico beat Jamaica 1-0 in their first match in the Copa America on Sunday (June 23).
Houston's NRG Stadium saw a lively crowd of Mexican fans wearing 'El Tri' jerseys today. But even with so much support, Mexico did not spend the first half well. The team's star player and captain Edson Alvarez left the field with an injury amid repeated missed opportunities.
Premier League club West Ham's star midfielder Edson Alvarez was injured in the 27th minute of the match. Lying on the grass, he gripped his hamstring. Later, Alvarez, suffering from pain, was taken away on a stretcher with the help of two doctors. Whether he will be able to play in Mexico's upcoming matches is yet to be confirmed.
The captain's absence has had an impact on Mexico. Despite being behind in terms of strength, Jamaica has put pressure on the Mexicans. Jamaica even took the lead with Michael Antonio's header in the 57th minute of the second half. However, with the help of the video assistant referee, the goal was later declared offside by the on-duty referee.
The second half started a bit later than scheduled. However, Mexico showed some control of the game in this half. Substitute for Andre Blake, Arteaga got on the scoresheet in the 69th minute with a superb shot from 20 yards. That goal decided the fate of the match.
With this win, Mexico is second in Group 'B' with 3 points. These two teams will meet next Thursday (June 27) against Venezuela, which is at the top. However, before that match, the team will wait for the team captain to recover from his injury.
